Film Analysis of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Essays

Film Analysis of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Essays Film Analysis of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Paper Film Analysis of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Paper In Michael Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), the associations among individuals and recollections become the point of convergence of an extremely one of a kind sentiment. Using new innovation, the chance of deleting recollections causes excruciating connections to vanish like they never occurred. The story of Joel and Clementine permits the crowd to reevaluate and scrutinize the procedure they experience as valuable or damaging. Despite the fact that the procedure may be useful in taking out the torment caused from someone else, four key scenes show how the exercises learned through relationship encounters are significant. Toward the beginning of the film, Joel Barish (Jim Carey) ends up getting up in the first part of the day from what seems to have been a profound rest. With an abrupt desire to dump the train to work, he gets another train to Montauk on this chilly, blanketed Valentine’s Day. Both the climate and his own appearance utilize solid imagery for melancholy and forlornness. In spite of his emotions, his consideration is immediately caught by a splendidly dressed lady that out of nowhere shows up on the sea shore. To have appeared unexpectedly is â€Å"meant to propose, unpretentiously, that she isn't absolutely a more unusual, that in some style she may as of now be known to him† (Toles 114). : In spite of the fact that Joel is bashful and too frightened to even consider approaching her, the active Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) gets intrigued by the timid and calm man on the train ride once more from Montauk. As the two start talking, the crowd figures out how altogether different the pair, as Joel puts on a show of being dull and exhausting while Clementine is active and fun. When they start getting to know one another, fascination sets in and forms into a relationship of genuine alternate extremes. At the point when their relationship of a year turns sour after a battle between them, Clementine decides to have Joel eradicated from her brain by a strategy. Joel, devastated subsequent to finding what Clementine had done, decides to have a similar method done to ease himself of the torment. One of the principal scenes in the film is the main excursion of Joel and Clementine. The two make a late night excursion to visit the solidified Charles River. In spite of the fact that Joel is exceptionally apprehensive and uncertain about exiting onto the solidified stream, Clementine runs and slides past him. Subsequent to falling and getting up, she at that point compels Joel to step out of his customary range of familiarity and to exit onto the ice. Now, the excursion turns out to be something beyond a piece of a sentimental date, yet in addition another experience for Joel. While Joel is typically peaceful and to himself about everything, this trip caused him to escape his usual range of familiarity and accomplish something he in any case wouldn’t even think to do. With this being another experience for him to slacken up and have a great time, such an exercise could give him a difference in pace from the dull and exhausting daily practice of his ordinary life. Another scene in the film is the battle among Clementine and Joel. Joel is sitting at home stressed late one night when Clementine appears at three in the first part of the day plastered. She discloses to Joel that she destroyed his vehicle, which upsets Joel. He starts letting his feelings defeat him and shoots by revealing to her how she was being unreliable and could have genuinely harmed somebody. Reacting to the analysis, Clementine reveals to Joel he seems like an old woman. The little contention becomes bigger as the two start tossing low blows focusing on each other’s weaknesses. Now, Clementine rapidly snatches her things and leaves. Having a question with somebody is a piece of life. Being seeing someone closeness with that other individual and permits each to know the other’s instabilities and how to get under their skin to make them upset. At the point when circumstances break out and things are said that weren’t implied, that experience gives an individual feelings that are awkward and remarkable. Managing these sentiments is an encounter to gain from and one to maintain a strategic distance from. In spite of the fact that the result isn’t consistently the equivalent, it gives information to deal with future circumstances and improve circumstances and debates when they turn sour. While experiencing the memory deleting technique, Joel starts needing to safeguard his recollections of Clementine after he gradually begins acknowledging how upbeat he was with her. In doing as such, he endeavors to shroud recollections of her where they don’t have a place, for example, in his adolescence, in order to save her memory. In one of Joel’s beloved recollections, his mom is washing him in the kitchen sink close by Clementine. While being washed, Joel remarks on how secure he feels as he is demonstrated being extremely loose and upbeat. Right away a short time later, his memory is eradicated which causes a lot of pity. The impact of having his beloved recollections deleted could effectsly affect him sometime later. A connection between a small kid and his mom is exceptionally pivotal in the advancement of the youngster. This relationship is among the first and gives social improvement of how the kid will grow up and act. With the positive beloved memory deleted, he isn't just losing an exceptional second imparted to his mom, however a portion of the encounters he had that help shape him the manner in which he is. â€Å"It’s as though the passing of a powerful cherished memory has brought about the departure of a youth itself and rendered silly the world the memory helped sustain† (Reeve 18). One of the most tender love scenes Joel encounters before it becomes deleted is a room scene. Clementine and Joel are nestled up in a bed while an intrigued Clementine talks pleasantly to a tired Joel. She demands becoming acquainted with him and wishes he would share things about himself. Depicting herself as resembling an open book, Clementine reveals to Joel everything about herself. She at that point reveals to Joel that he can open up to her and disclose to her things too on the grounds that that’s what closeness is about. Joel reacts saying he doesn’t have anything in light of the fact that he’s not fascinating. Clementine was directly about sharing data as it is the reason for a relationship. Knowing an individual all around is essential in having a steady and solid relationship. Knowing next to no or nothing about an individual won’t make for an enduring relationship as there won’t be any premise of a science other than physical appearance. Having the option to open up to others is significant in close relations, however with any relations inside society that require correspondence. While watching the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, most watchers decipher the film as a run of the mill sentimental show. Burrowing further past the possibility of memory deleting, one sees a message as taken from the film. That message is to take our past encounters, regardless of whether fortunate or unfortunate and gain from them. We as individuals gain from our missteps, and in that procedure we can get more astute and expertise to deal with circumstances. In the event that our recollections were deleted, exercises educated would get overlooked and encounters that help shape us as people wouldn’t exist. Regardless of whether it is facing a challenge, dealing with a contest, having positive encounters as a youngster or learning correspondences aptitudes, they are urgent snippets of data that are required. Regardless of how excruciating a memory may be, the cost paid in intelligence picked up from a terrible encounter exceeds information lost from an eradicated memory. ? American Religious Movements Essay Example For Students

American Religious Movements Essay American Religious Movements Essay: Fundamentalism and Its Influence on Evangelicalism American fundamentalism and American fervency appear to go connected at the hip. Zeal and fundamentalism both pressure life dependent on the good book, apology, and an individual relationship with God. Nobody would deny the monstrous impact that fundamentalism had on fervency or the similitudes between the two. Albeit a few history specialists would recommend that zeal was experiential and partisan while fundamentalism was traditionalist and hostile to innovator, plainly fundamentalism could never have made due as long as it has in the event that it couldn't adjust to advancement and exist inside a pluralist society. American Protestantism battled during the 1920s with the issues of scriptural analysis, wellsprings of expert in Christianity, and the hypothesis of development. Presbyterians and Baptists experienced parts in their divisions as the occasions of this decade started to work on fundamentalism. For instance, John T. Extensions was put being investigated for the instructing of development, which damaged a Tennessee state resolution. The developing contention among Fundamentalists and Modernists as to scriptural analysis and developmental hypotheses isn't what is significant in breaking down American Fundamentalism. What is critical to investigate is, taking into account the recognized effect of these powers, why a minority of Christians reacted in one style while the larger part responded in another(Sandeen xi). It was this part in Christianity that caused numerous individuals to accept that fundamentalism ought to have vanished seventy years back. Yet, fundamentalism endure and there has been an ongoing resurgence in its prevalence. Moving to the post World War II period, the outreaching alliance started to speak to the more seasoned ages, to the Hollywood populace, and to pioneers in Washington D.C. Not long after the war, the strict clashes that tainted fundamentalism during the 1920s were not, at this point applicable. Protestantism, in its mainline structure, had gotten substantially more outreaching in its inclination and its factions turned out to be considerably more keen on turning out to be perceived openly. Numerous students of history concur that, what has not frequently been perceived, notwithstanding, is that one of the most significant main thrusts behind the after war resurgence of religion was a framework of dynamic fundamentalists(Carpenter 223). Pentecostalism, which fundamentalism was a branch of, and Southern Baptism were two of a few different strict impacts existing after the war, however it was primarily the fundamentalists who drove the post bellum strict recovery. The cutting edge translation of religion is that it is consistently in decay on account of modernization. As a great many people concur, innovation prompts secularization and secularization prompts strict lack of concern in specific circles. This conviction is brought about by the experience that history has educated us. Christianity was before the learned person, otherworldly, and moral manual for the entirety of life. The congregation used to assume a fundamental job in practically all open issues. The secularization of confidence has constrained Christianity to contend with other amazing strict and nonreligious perspectives. An examination of the restoration of American fundamentalism is the way to understanding why this regular conviction is bogus and that, as the years progressed, religion has endure very well in a pluralistic setting. Fervent Christianity ought not be seen as a religion of encouragement for the individuals who can't acknowledge the predominant humanist, innovator, liberal, and common push of standard society(Riesebrodt 47). Rather, it ought to be viewed as a religion that can adjust to the changing standards of advancement. Protestantism utilizes zeal and fundamentalism as their method of identifying with innovation. For instance, present day society has set an accentuation on decision making and uniqueness, while simultaneously, fervency lectures an individual strict encounter and fundamentalism stresses opportunity, as a rule from government. .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330 , .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330 .postImageUrl , .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330 .focused content zone { min-stature: 80px; position: relative; } .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330 , .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330:hover , .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330:visited , .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330:active { border:0!important; } .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330 { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; mistiness: 1; change: haziness 250ms; webkit-progress: darkness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330:active , .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330:hover { murkiness: 1; change: obscurity 250ms; webkit-progress: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330 .focused content zone { width: 100%; position: relative; } .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330 .ctaText { outskirt base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: striking; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content enhancement: underline; } .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; fringe: none; outskirt sweep: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; text style weight: intense; line-tallness: 26px; moz-fringe range: 3px; content adjust: focus; content design: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url( arrow.png)no-rehash; position: supreme; right: 0; top: 0; } .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .udff81417c57757070d01 11552d207330 .focused content { show: table; stature: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .udff81417c57757070d0111552d207330:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: Fingerprints Essay As we underscore voluntarism, evangelicals react by selecting more adherents and making organizations to guarantee the advancement of the churchs place in regular daily existence. Its Not Always Rainbows and Butterflies

It’s Not Always Rainbows and Butterflies So, Im in the Stratton Reading Room right now and the number of students here had dwindled down to single digits. I logged on to take a short study break, and This entry is going to be really spontaneous, since Snively and Paul both coincidentally (or maybe not so coincidentally, since everyone is feeling hosed right now yup, and its ONLY been 4 weeks of class!) decided to blog about schoolwork, I decided to pitch in my own ideas. So, you all probably has heard that getting an education at MIT is like taking a drink from a fire hose, right? (If you havent, Ill glomp you! jk. =D) The truth is, as cliched as the statement had become, its very much true. At MIT, the courses are not just fast-paced; they practically gallop. I think one of my fellow 11s put it quite well: Taking classes at MIT is like riding a train whose speed increases exponentially with time. Additionally, this train does not have any seats. Instead, you are given handlebars on the side of the train to hang on to. In the beginning, the train starts out really slow, so sometimes you dont even have to hold on. You can jog on the side of the train and still be quite alright. However, as the train gains momentum, you gotta jump onto the train, hang on to the handlebars, and meet the blast of wind in your face head-on. Coincidentally, I didnt delete an email I received a couple of days ago just because one sentence in it made me chuckle: Its the start of yet another week woo hoo. Even if you managed to have a nice weekend, its now time to return to the crazy world of enormous textbooks, incomprehensible psets, and mind-numbing lectures. I just had to laugh. =p Intense, eh? So this was my day: 1:17 AM: Began studying for the 18.03 test that Paul mentioned. 3:02 AM: Decided resistance is futile. Shower. Pack up. 3:27 AM: Bedtime! zzzzzz 10:20 AM: Riiiiiing! Groggily turns off the alarm. 10:27 AM: *looks at the clock* *tries to decipher clock hands* *face hits the pillow* 10:43 AM: *looks at the clock* *tries to decipher clock hands* AH Im going to be late! (my first class was a language class, and tardiness+absences will kill your grade) 10:47 Am: Gets ready while mentally getting annoyed at self for being so sleepy even after sleeping seven hours. Note to self: Must be the New England weather. 10:53 AM: Power walks down Dorm Row (note: iHouse is almost as far from campus as Next is). 11:02 AM: Gets to the first floor of Building 16, all the way across campus (this is almost East Campus). Meets Spanish professor while waiting for the elevator. (phew, Im not late.) 11:55 AM: Class dismissed. Heads on to 5.111 (chemistry). 12:00 PM: Arrives in class. Professor begins talking about periodic trends. 12:47 PM: *yawn* Begins to feel that increasing and decreasing starts to sound curiously similar. 1:00 PM: Arrive at 14.01 (economics) lecture, professor begins drawing pretty graphs and curves on the board. 1:32 PM: Drifts off into the merry land where everything is in equilibrium and there isnt any math equations to solve 1:48 PM: Jolts to a start and realizes that, in fact, life is full of equations and variables, as evidenced by the chalkboard, which had since begun filling up with mathematics statements. 2:00 PM: Arrives at 18.03 (differential equations) lecture, professor began debating with self about the pros and cons of non-linear functions and linear functions. 2:28 PM: Paid rapt attention in anticipation for the exam on Wednesday. Note-taking interrupted by a snore from the kid beside me that had begun napping. 2:53 PM: Kid beside me wakes up. (good timing!) 3:00 PM: Famished, heads off to Stata Center for lunch. 3:32 PM: Checks email and surfs the Web (I discovered what 419 scams and scam-baiters are today!) 4:02 PM: Heads off to Hayden Library to do some work. 4:08 PM: Begins reading physics (8.02), from Chapter 1. 4:59 PM: Reviewed all the material since Week 1. Feels proud of self. 5:02 PM: Decides to take a little break to reward self. 5:03 PM: Promptly falls asleep in the cushy armchairs in the library. zzzzzzz 6:47 PM: Groggily peers at a clock. WOAH, its almost 7?! 6:50 PM: Decides to get some dinner. 6:51 PM: Cold blast of air from the outside immediately killed any sleepbugs. 7:00 PM: Arrives at Au Bon Pain, by Kendall Square. 7:08 PM: Ordered a sandwich and some soup and began studying while eating. (Note: I actually like studying in cafes during weekday nights sometimes because I really enjoy the ambience. Also, cafes are generally not very loud on weekday nights as well, so it all works out =p) 8:47 PM: Cleaning lady starts to clean up the shop. 9:02 PM: Cleaning lady starts to throw me evil looks and begins vacuuming very close to me. 9:06 PM: Leaves the restaurant, proceeds to Stratton Reading Room. 9:10 PM: Decided to traverse from East Campus to Building 7 completely using the underground tunnel systems (something I havent done since Orientation). Discovered several interesting nooks and crannies. 9:25 PM: Arrives at Reading Room. 9:34 PM: Resumes studying physics. 10:10 PM: A girl nearby begins complaining about her boyfriend, who apparently is in another state and therefore cannot find out about what I say, to her friend. (Im in the Lounge, where talking is allowed) 10:13 PM: Girl A ends her tirade. Girl B begins sympathizing with Girl A. 10:15 PM: Girl A refuses to be consoled. Complains about her boyfriend some more. 10:47 PM: Switches gears to studying for 18.03. 11:03 PM: Some friends from 18.03 arrive, discussed some questions. STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY 1:47 AM: Did all I can do with 18.03. Began working on Spanish assignment. 2:01 AM: Finished Spanish assignment. 2:10 AM: Logs on to the Internet. 3:12 AM: And here I am. I guess Im about 70% finished for studying for the 18.03 exam, and somewhat prepped for my 8.02 exam next Thursday (I have four exam next week, oh bother). I think its time to sleep. Good night! =D - (and because I dont like blogging w/o photos) (ok, I know it says ful sunrise its late =p)

Online Shopping The World Wide Web Essay - 1099 Words

One of the most popular clothing retailers today is Forever 21. They are growing at an exponential rate. Many millennials enjoy shopping at this store because they carry the latest street fashion. The fashion industry, specifically the clothing market, is one of the most competitive markets in the world. This includes but is not limited to clothing, accessories footwear, etc. It is now easier than it ever was to buy, sell, and even market these products. Technological advances allow us to do this such as, online shopping which gives the customers an oppourtunity to see what a company has to offer through the world-wide web. Online shopping is unique because you can now buy almost anything at any time. This is bad news for even popular brick and mortar type stores for the simple fact that customers would have to physically drive to the location in order to purchase something. This puts those specific clothing retailers at a huge disadvantage in today’s society. Clothing retailers such as Forever 21, American Eagle, and HM are considered to be giants when it comes to retail clothing for millennials. Social media is another popular market trend nowadays, along with word of mouth. In America, it is safe to say that most people who buy clothes are likely to have a smartphone. Informal Essay Free Essays

I received an education from elementary school through college in Shanghai, China. As Shanghai is an international city, its education authorities greatly value the importance of English learning and English is thus one of the mandatory subjects taught beginning in elementary school. Chinese students can score high marks and even outscore native English speakers on tests such as the GRE and GMAT, but on writing sections, Chinese students’ performance lags far behind the average. We will write a custom essay sample on Informal Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Why does this happen? What should be the proper teaching strategy in an ESL/EFL writing classroom? This paper shares my perspectives on English writing, teaching, and learning, based on my own experiences. My English writing classes started in middle school. Before that, my English classes mostly emphasized the teaching of vocabulary and grammar. However, even though I was now a middle school student, English writing was still not treated as an important part of English learning. There was no separate English writing class. Once or twice every month, my English teacher would give us a 40-minute English writing lecture. The ironic thing is, as I see it today, this lecture was still more of a reading class than a writing class, because most of the time my teacher would assign us a certain amount of reading, ask us to underline the sentences we thought were â€Å"good† and write them into our notebooks. Although I agree that reading is the foundation of writing, I disapprove of this way of teaching writing. In my second year of middle school, teachers started to â€Å"formally† teach writing. We would be given certain simple topics to write about such as â€Å"The most unforgettable thing in your life† or â€Å"My family†. To begin the writing task, my teacher would first read several examples and carefully help the class analyze why each composition was excellent and explain what we should be aware of when writing about this topic. Another thing worth mentioning is that these examples were usually assigned as rote learning. The only criteria for a composition included length, absence of spelling or grammar mistakes, and the use of new vocabulary. As we can see, the content of the compositions was completely overlooked; instead, grammar and vocabulary alone still played the key roles in our writing education. Limiting the scope of this paper, I will not continue on with a summary of my high school and college English writing education, because I believe these early xperiences already suffice to represent the usual methods of teaching writing in China. Today, whenever I reflect on my past learning experiences in writing, I meet with some difficult emotions. I can say I am a skilled writer in my native language, but I still lack confidence in English writing. I feel I am a victim of English education in China because I always have a hard time outputting what is in my mind with decent English. Whenever that difficulty arises, I feel awful, as if I am linguistically and cognitively deficient. Also, having been educated for so long in China, where repeatedly writing model compositions is the fundamental approach in improving writing, another weakness of my writing is its lack of creativity and critical thinking. My thoughts are restricted into a limited space and I am just accustomed to recalling whatever is already filed in my repertoire of writing expressions, drawn from those model compositions. One year ago, I enrolled in a GRE writing course in Shanghai to prepare for my GRE test in which the only materials handed out were two books. One was a 28-page book with all kinds of model sentences this organization had arranged in a list, and the second was a thick book covering all the likely topics (about 130 topics in all) to be tested in the GRE writing section with sample compositions. Although the instructor offered some insightful writing skills, the implication was obvious to everyone—for those unable to write a composition themselves, just repeat the sample sentences and compositions; hopefully, the topic you are tested on happens to be the one you have learned by rote. Having undergone these frustrations and confusions in English writing, I realized that good English writing skills do not come from popular writing instruction books, no matter how appealing the titles—whether â€Å"Learn to Write in 10 Minutes,† or â€Å"Be a Writing King,† one cannot develop into a skilled writer by simply memorizing the tips they offer or memorizing the sentences they list. You can never become a skilled writer by only recalling sample compositions, or even by focusing only on correct grammar and spelling. From my own experience, I do benefit from reading books and newspapers written by native English speakers and recording the brilliant sentences or ideas from these resources. This might be the only aspect of the Chinese English education system I applaud, and I still keep this habit today. However, it should never be the sole method of learning. The second strategy I recommend to ESL writing students is to reject whatever appears first in their mind when searching for writing resources, because this might also be another’s first choice. Seven out of ten students might choose Marie Curie for the topic â€Å"Female Scientists;† erase the thought of Marie Curie and instead choose Ada Byron or Rosalind Franklin. You need to think carefully in order to make your compositions outstanding from others’ and leave your readers with a lasting impression. In my opinion, not everyone can produce the superior sentences or command the vast vocabulary of Mark Twain, but we can certainly distinguish ourselves by our content. Having practiced English writing for several years, I think the two most salient differences from my Chinese writing style and English writing style are the writing tone and the method of organizing a composition. Chinese writing styles are typically reserved while American styles are more often straightforward. Chinese people pursue collectivism while Americans value individualism. To most Chinese, maintaining harmonious interpersonal relationships is vitally important. Moreover, the Chinese government exerts invisible power over people through words, so people are cautious in expressing their opinions in order to avoid unnecessary trouble. As a result, My Chinese writing style is relatively more tactful than my English writing. I tend to call for the collective good in the last sentence of my Chinese compositions. In contrast, when I write in English, I prefer to express my voice without worrying about breaking harmony with others because I know individual rights are highly recognized in Western society. The second difference between my Chinese writing and English writing is the method of organizing compositions. The basic English composition structure follows the pattern of introduction-body-conclusion while the Chinese structure is characterized as beginning-following-turning-concluding, which is the same as the Japanese style. The turning section is expected to be surprising, and the whole composition reaches its climax at this point. This also is related to what I have mentioned above—collectivism and individualism. When writing in Chinese, I like to make my writing beautiful, lively and ornate for my readers. In other words, I feel I have responsibility for my readers and hope they will regard reading my writings as an enjoyment. However, when writing in English, all I think about is how to make my ideas clear to my readers. From my personal experiences of learning and writing in English, I can see what an influential role culture plays in writing in a second language. My students might come from different cultural backgrounds and hold different beliefs. These all have a great influence over both what they write and how they write. As an ESL instructor, I think my job is not simply to teach them to comply with the Western way of writing and tell them to reject their original ways of writing. Instead, I think what is valuable for ESL instructors to know is how to guide our students toward writing truly excellent compositions. Their writing must be clear enough to be appreciated by the Western world, but should also maintain the cultural characteristics of their native language writing, because multiculturalism enriches our writing, bringing it color and vibrancy. The Great Gatsby Assignment Essay Example

The Great Gatsby Assignment Essay ts a new year and after 2 seasons on my last steed I am lucky enough to be able to build up my new ride for the 07 season. While todays off the shelf rigs can offer an amazing value for what you pay, I wanted to build something unique that stands out a bit. What I ended up with is a 36. 3 lbs coil sprung DH bike that you wont see anywhere else. I have to say that coming in a close second to the actual riding, the technical aspect of mountain biking is what really excites me. I am a self admitted tech nerd. I can spend hours reading about the latest gadgets from any sport, be it Fl, MotoGP or ven tennis. If its lighter, faster or uses a new material then I am interested. The great part about our particular sport is that if you have the time, money and knowledge you can build some really neat things. I dont have a great deal of any of those three things but I still try, even though a smart guy once told me it was the first step towards failure. So what I did was try to build up a light and very functional DH bike. Actually what I built is a full on DH race bike. I Just happen to not race all the much, only hitting up a few each year. But what I do like to do is pin it. Weight was a huge concern for me, not because of any delusions of getting my pro number plate, but because this is my only bike. I have had more XC-type bikes in the past and I hated descending on them. It was not worth the uphill gain. I want to ride everything on my DH bike and to make that a little more enjoyable I had to pick my parts real carefull like. I Just happend to end up with a really light DH race bike! Fact: All 3 current Honda factory riders have raced World Cups on Oranges Fact: All 3 current Honda factory riders have raced World Cups on Oranges The biggest decision to make when building up your dream bike is which frame you will decide to hang all your parts on. I had a few on my short list so there was some thinking to be done. The U. S. made Iron Horse Sunday frame is one that Ive always had my eyes on (not that Id ever rail a corner like Sam even if I was on his bike). The Glory from Giant was also hard to say no to, being one of the best deals out there. The DW Link and Giants Maestro designs look similar but work in different ways and are about as far away as you can get from a well thought out single pivot design as seen on the Orange 224 frame. I have spent the last two seasons on an Orange 223 and came to love the light weight and simple bike, so even though the 224 frame is almost more than the Glory and Sunday put together, I still wanted one. After doing my homework on the frames the decision was made for me. The 224 was the only one that had the geometry that I liked. A bikes angles are absolutely the most important factor in its performance. There are a lot of different takes on suspension out there but the truth is that while some work different, they all do work good. But a DH bike with a 67 degree head angle will be ntirely different beast than a 64 degree monster. The 224 has that slack 64 degrees up front and also the low b. b. height and longer wheelbase that I feel at home on. Another consideration of mine was a full length seat tube on the frame. Some of my best rides are xc rides from home with my iPod and the seat on my DH bike Jacked up to the max. Oh, and it is light. The 224 is claimed to be one of the lightest production DH frames which is key when trying to piece together a light bike, might as well start off on the right foot. Suspension is the second most important part of any rig. Again, there are a lot of hings out there that do work great so it is more important to pick something based on your needs instead of Just looking for the trickiest possible set of sliders. But what if I could have a fork that came in at under 6. 51b, had a super low crown to axle length and worked great to boot? Id say that would be a pretty trick fork! So what I built is most likely one of the more unique forks out there. I started with a set of white 07 Boxxer lowers that use the Maxle system. Dropping the pinch bolts helped save a bit of weight but also means I only need a single allen key to get my wheel off. It doesnt hurt that the athena white lowers look dope next to my white 224 frame. I had originally planned on tracking down some of the old gold ti-nitrite stanction tubes, I did find a few but nothing in usable condition. Thankfully Tyler had some of the slippery silver tubes laying about from a buddies wrecked fork. The rest of the fork was garbage but the silver stanctions were mint so a small amount of money was exchanged and I nearly had a complete fork. Instead of dropping in some boring (but good working) World Cup internals, I installed a MOJO Boxxcart in the right leg and the ingle MOJO spring in the left. MOJO decals MOJO decals Now, you may or may not be aware that MOJO does not even produce these nice little units anymore. So why am I telling you about this stuff if its not made anymore? Because it is by far the best suspension I have even ridden. Ill admit, its not for everyone. It feels like ass in the parking lot (but thanks for telling me, everyone! ) but once you open it up on dirt it will blow you away. Stay tuned for pictures and details of the Boxxcart that will be in the (really long) review of the whole bike this summer. So what I ended up with is a 6. 1b coil sprung and MOJO damped Boxxer. The MOJO rebound knob Out back the boing is handled quite well by a Fox DHX 5. 0. Fox obviously know how to produce top end stuff as they have been in the suspension game for a long, long time. The great thing about the 5. 0 is the range of adjustment. If I am on a trail or course that would normally be faster on a smaller travel (read: stiffer) bike I can turn my 224 into that bike without to much hassle. Likewise, she can be a rock and root eating machine and all I need to do it is a single 4mm allen key and a simple shock pump. Another plus is the range of rebound adjustment. Some of the newer shocks on the market seem to have no noticeable difference in return speed until the final turn of the adjuster. All this adjustment is great if you know what is going on back there but one thing I did want was a slightly more active ride out of my 5. 0 shock. After some top secret trickery on a late night at the shop I think I have get her dialed. 5. 0 w/ Ti spring So you may be starting to see a trend here. I am building a very single purpose bike. A bike that is meant to pin it fast down fast trails. I am not the rider who stops to hit p the skinnys a few times or goes to sesh the local gravel pit drop, all I want to do is go. Sometimes the most important part of going is the stopping or Just slowing down a bit. Only a little bit though. I am a huge Avid fan, having spent time on the original Juicy 7s, 5s and Juicy Carbons. You cant really go wrong with any of those setups but I wanted something a little bit special. Last season some of the top SRAM riders were sporting the new Juicy Ultimate levers mated with Code calipers. Since I am nobodies top rider I had to spend my personal booty. Lucky for us peons the Code and Ultimate parts can be bought seperately. Using the Ultimates upper end saved some grams over the 7s master cylinders plus there are no finicky red dials for friends to play with. You still have the ability to fine tune the bite point but youll need an allen key to do it. Code caliper Code caliper The Code calipers bump up the power a bit by using four pistons and more importantly a much larger pad surface area. After a few bleeds the Ultimate/Code combo works great, much to my relief as SRAM does not advise combining the two systems. Two years ago I saw a picture of Fabian Barels bike sporting a 6 rear rotor o I decided to give it a try. It worked great with my old Juicy Carbons, actually saves nearly a 1/4 pound and should perform Just fine with the even more powerful Code calipers. I expect a lot of power but will my hybrid brakes keep the Juicy modulation that I love so much? X. O shifter and Ultimate lever mounted using Avids sweet Matchmaker bar clamp X. O shifter and Ultimate lever mounted using Avids sweet Matchmaker bar clamp It is no different with the wheels I chose but I did decide to avoid the more expensive rims out there. I put a rim thats on a DH bike in the same category as brake pads or a hain: Disposable. I wanted something light but nothing to expensive as I would most likely be going through a few as the season got bigger and badder. I have had nothing but great results with my set of Alex Supra Ds, under 600 grams, easy to build and very reliable (gotta love the anodized gold option! ). But at $90 msrp canadian they are a little expensive to be turning them into squares. The SingleTrack from Sun seemed to be the perfect choice. Closer to 500 grams then 600, a decent width and cheap! The msrp here in Canada is only $40 so it was hard to say no. Hubs re a hard one. There are a lot of amazing hubs out there, some seem to be more art then a bike component. The truth is that they all use wheel bearings that I can buy from local hardware store or distributor so why drop more on a rear hub then most regular people spend on a whole bike? Well.. l cant! As much as I wanted a Hadley or DT I could not Justify it. I would rather put that money into my suspension or brakes. I did manage to find a sweet set of hubs that come in at nearly half as much as some others, are lighter and are easy to service. WTB may not Jump out at you hen you are thinking about hubs for your big bike but you should really look them up. The Super Duty rear hub is an amazing little bit of work. Unlike most hubs, everything is a push fit which makes it super easy to disassemble and clean. The 12/150mm Super Duty rear hub has been stripped of absolutely any extra material that it does not need. You also slide your cassette onto a aluminum freehub body which is where most of the weight savings come from. WTB SuperDuty hub Check the aluminium freehub body Actually, the rear hub weighs 305 grams and the front comes in at only 190. The folks at WTB are also good people which has a lot to do with me picking their hubs over some others. Poor spokes. No one ever thinks about them and they do so much work. I really did want to build these wheels with Sapims super high end CX-Ray spokes but time was not on Sapims side. All my parts were where they needed to be and I had some very nice black DT Champion spokes to hold everything together so that is what I chose, pertinence be damned! The CX-Rays do make a lot of sense though and I hope to use them on my next wheelset. I have not had a spoke break in years but hey are light and the minimal middle section is bladed which makes building and truing alot easier as I can hold the spoke with a special tool to prevent and wind-up (wind-up is when a spoke turns with the nipple when truing, it makes things difficult). Aluminum nipples get such a bad rap but as long as you treat them right they work great. I weigh in at 1701b. which is not huge but I have run al. nipples exclusively for years now with no problems. I am sure I have had no trouble because I look after my wheels though. With A1. ipples you need to keep the tension from getting to low as he constant loading and unloading of spokes can snap the heads off. I also use a four sided spoke wrench to finish the build, tension and true. Holding onto all four sides minimizes the chance of rounding the corners on the softer metal and also dropping a touch of thin lube into the nipple now and then keeps things from seizing up. A light wheelset can be the k ey to a fun and nimble bike so I thought it was important to choose parts carefully to end up with the right package, something I think has been done. Everyone go buy Srams X. O shifters and derailleurs. And if you cant afford them then ell a liver or something because you owe it to yourself to roll with X. O. I like nice stuff (obviously) but my rides dont depend on it. If I am on a test bike with a lower end group set I will have Just as much fun as on some rare super bike. But this X. O stuff is amazing. Basically, you put it on your bike and then 6 months later you scrape the dirt off it and maybe make a small adjustment. The 1:1 cable pull ratio means that stretch and other variables that can cause shifting to go haywire will have half the effect that it would on Shimanos traditional 2:1 pull. I love how I am able to move the lower shift paddle to a more comfortable position for my tiny girls hands. Its a feature that I thought was more gimmick than function but now I Just would not be comfortable with a stock non adjustable shifter. All around quality parts and despite the fragile look they can take a beating. 0k people, stop buying outboard bearing cranksets. They are not better. In the real world they do not last longer and you can not tell me that you can feel a differance in stiffness on your mountain bike with big knobby tires and suspension. k, you can ell me whatever you want but I wont believe you. I will go through two ISIS b. bs in a year of riding. I gave outboards a shot a while back and if I had stuck with it would have gone through four sets of cups. Lame. Take your chain off your external bearing crankset and give it a spin, not to great eh? Even on a broken in external bearing b. b. you will have a ridiculious amount of seal drag, way too much to be accept able for the meager amount of power we put out. Unfortunetly, the amount of companies putting out nice light ISIS cranks is shrinking so hit up e-bay and scoop up what you can get
